Capturing North Cascades Night Sky Images is a lot of fun. There are so many wonderful places to shoot from.
Along the North Cascades Highway there are several wonderful spots where you can just pull off at an overlook, park and start shooting. These spots all have est rooms and you don.t have to walk more than a few hundred feet. They are the Diablo Overlook and the Washington Pass Overlook.
On the Mount Baker Highway, Rte 542, you can drive to the end in the summer, to Artist Point which is a spectacular place for night sky imaging.
I offer Night Sky Photo Tours, these are guided photo tours to capture night sky images. The tours are in two categories: Drive -In and Hike-In.
Drive-In locations are, as above, the overlooks along Highway 20 and Artist Point on Rte 542.
Hike in locations are many: Lookout Towers are wonderful, lakes, rivers.
One of my favorites is the Winchester Lookout. The lookout is open to the public and you can spend the night there. The area immediately around the lookout is flat and is ideal for tromping about in the dark with a tripod.
Another favorite is the Washington Pass Overlook, on the North Cascades Highway. This is an easy access spot, just drive and walk to the overlook. The views of the Liberty Bell and the great loop of the North Cascades Highway make wonderful foregrounds.
Here are 8 more images from various locations.
Night Sky Photo Tours are available year round. Each month the New Moon gives a 5 day window to capture Milky Way images.
