Balloon Festival

The Sequim Balloon Festival was held a few years ago. Although I have ridden in a hot air balloon before, this was my first time to an actual, balloon fest.

The event was staged in a corn field in Sequim, on the Olympic Peninsula.

There was a stage for music, booths with crafts and food, an antique car show and of course, balloons!

I showed up for Night Glow, and evening event there you could see the balloons alight contrasted by the night sky.

A thick sheet of plastic was laid over the field, then covered with water to create a reflective pond so that photographers could get reflections of the balloons.

There must have been a hundred cameras in a semi circle vying for the perfect vantage to snap shots.

The sunset was spectacular and provided a great back drop. Slowly the balloons were brought out and inflation began.

Water tends to have a mind of its own and did not cooperate very well. Most of the plastic was exposed.

I managed to get a few cool images. Sometimes it takes ingenuity to exclude things from an image.

I have been to a few balloon fests since, but none as photogenic as this event in Sequim. Like night sky imaging of the Milky Way it takes a good amount of luck for all the factors to converge for great shots.
