Skyline Divide Trail

Skyline Divide Trail
The Skyline Divide Trail is located in NW Washington State, in the North Cascades. To get there you head east on Route 542, the Mount Baker Highway, passing the town of Glacier.

The dirt road from the highway to the start of the trail is long, but navigable by any type of car. Like most North Cascades mountain hikes, especially those close to the highway, weekends will find scores of people along on the hike with you.

This particular weekend I was accompanied by no less than 7 people. We made our way up to timberline, where the trail breaks out into the open. Skyline Divide is a long arcing ridge stretching to the slopes of Mount Baker. July is the usual bloom month for scads of wonderful wildflowers carpeting the ridge top.

Our goal was to find a camping spot along the route and just kick back, relax and enjoy the views.
By the time evening arrived there were about 20 of us, campers, photographers, some kids and a few dogs, all there along the meadowy ridge-line, backing in the sunset glow.

The view to the left was filled with Mount Baker, and to the right, Bellingham Bay.

Last year after making this trip I posted many of the images on Flickr. The shots of Mount Baker framed in purple lupine garnered little interest, but this image of the photographer and his dog went viral.
Skyline Divide 2015-1The Skyline Divide Trail is one of the trips I take clients on for the North Cascades Photo Tours. It’s a fantastical trip, you will love it! Find out more here.

So, this time around I thought I would include a few more images of the people, the dog and what they were photographing!
