The Skagit County Historical Museum has created a heritage barn tour including 55 historic registered barns. These self-guided tours include the build date, roof style, agricultural use and in many cases, the family history of many Skagit County pioneers.

Skagit Valley is one of the most fertile areas in the United States. Over 90 different crops are grown in the County. Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, tulips, daffodils, pickling cucumbers, specialty potatoes, Jonagold apples, green peas, and vegetable seed are some of the more important crops in this maritime valley. More tulip, iris, and daffodil bulbs are produced here than in any other county in the U.S. Ninety-five percent of the red potatoes grown in the state of Washington are from Skagit County.

There are hundreds of photogenic barns dotted across the valley, some in use, some abandoned. Only a few are a part of the Heritage Barn Tour, but they are no less interesting and alluring.

Planning for Your Tour

When to come for a visit? The best months to visit the Skagit Valley are March-October. The onset of Spring Time brings a thousand hues of green to the valley. April hosts the Daffodil and Tulip Festival. The fields are often water-laden creating wonderful reflective photo possibilities. As the crops grow and ripen the colors change and each season gives it’s own unique look and feel to imagery. September and October are wonderful times to come for a Barn Tour, the rich colors and hues of Autumn are not to be missed.

Weather – Skagit Valley Weather is…unpredictable. Spring sees temps in the 40’s and 50’s with rain common. Summer brings some hot sunny days.
